Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23 year old Nigerian al Qaeda operative failed to detonate a bomb aboard Northwest Flight 253 [Delta] on Christmas Day 2009. Explosives pentaerythritol (PETN) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) were concealed in his underwear, allowing him to detonate the bomb at the time of his choosing.
After the botched attempt , the enemy combatant Abdulmutallab faces several charges including the attempted use of a WMD weapon of mass destruction, attempted murder, the willful attempt to destroy and wreck an aircraft within the jurisdiction of the USA and willfully placing a destructive device on an aircraft.
